love, God + death

Everything is more beautiful because we’re doomed /
You will never be lovelier than you are now / We will never be here again.

― Homer, The Iliad

(Yes, the story with the big horse.)

I knew at a young age that if I was going to be a writer, it had to be songs. My house a humble one on the sandy shores of Homer, but I knew … I wanted to be and be remembered as a songwriter.

Originally, poetry was always sung. Even dating back to Homer’s age, it was sung. It had melody, it was meant to be performed, and it was meant to be shared. The ancient bard had three powers:

Enchantment (basically, the love song we all know and love);

Invocation – the power to call forth something, a spirit of some kind, or a blessing of some kind, like at a wedding or funeral, to say, this moment is important;

And the power of the curse. So, Love, God and Death.

To be a good songwriter, you have to develop all three superpowers. Because nothing is ever certain.
